Indian Institutes of Technology ( IITs )

What is IIT ?
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a group of autonomous public engineering institutes of India. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as "institutions of national importance", and lays down their powers, duties, framework for governance etc. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists sixteen institutes located at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar, Roorkee and Varanasi. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The IITs usually offer many degrees starting from B.Tech to Ph.D.



IIT(Kharagpur)



On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology(Kharagpur) Act declaring this Institute as an Institute of national importance. The Institute was also given the status of an autonomous University. From this modest start in 1950, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in a steady process of development with about 18 academic departments, five centres of excellence. the vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants. Currently it has about 450 faculty, 2200 employees and 2700 students on the campus. ). IIT Kharagpur also has a medical technology school (School of Medical Science and Technology), a management school (Vinod Gupta School of Management, a law school (Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law) and a infrastructure designing school (Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Designing and Management) within its premises.

IIT Bombay



The second IIT to be established, IIT Bombay, was founded in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai (Bombay) by an Act of Parliament. It was set up with assistance from UNESCO and the Soviet Union, which provided technical expertise. With an area of 2.23 km² (550 acres) and a total of 24 departments, centres and schools, it is the largest university in the state of Maharashtra. In addition, IIT Bombay has 13 student hostels with about 2,200 undergraduate and 2,000 postgraduate students. IIT Bombay also has schools in management (Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management) and information technology (Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology) on its premises. The Bharti Centre for Communication, set up with partnership between Bharti Foundation and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Bombay, was inaugurated on January 23, 2009 by Mr. Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises.

IIT Madras


IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 460 faculty, 4500 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It was established in 1959 with technical assistance from the Government of West GermanyThe Institute has fifteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India.

IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 in the city of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Campus is located on GT Road at Kalyanpur, about 16 km west of Kanpur city, on 1055 acres of land offered by the Government of UP. It is a residential campus offering accomodation to about 350 faculty members, about 700 support staff members, and about 4000 students. The campus has all the amenities for developing the personal, social and academic skills of the community.

IIT Delhi

Established as the College of Engineering in 1961, IIT Delhi was given the current name and declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963". It is located in Hauz Khas (New Delhi) and has an area of 1.3 km² (320 acres). It has 11 hostels and 26 departments, centres and schools. It has 426 faculty members and approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate students.

IIT, Guwahati
IIT, Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. IIT Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city.

IIT Roorkee

The University of Roorkee, was established in 1847 as the first engineering college of the British Empire Located in Uttarakhand, the college was renamed The Thomson College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It became first technical university of India in 1949 and was renamed "University of Roorkee". It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. The University entered 150th year of its existence in one or other form in October 1996. The University of Roorkee was included in the IIT system in 2001 as IIT Roorkee. Bachelor's Degree courses are offered in 10 disciplines in Engineering and Architecture; 55 Postgraduate Degree courses are offered in Engineering, Applied Science and Architecture and planning. IIT Rajasthan
IIT Rajasthan is one among the new set of IITs announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The location of the IIT in Rajasthan will be announced by the Govt. of India after completion of the formalities of land acquisition for setting up the new IIT in Rajasthan. However, in the meantime, IIT Kanpur has been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan. The academic session in IIT Rajasthan will commence from August 2008. To start with, a 4-year B.Tech. programme will be offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses and the fee structure and other rules will be broadly same as in the mentor IIT i.e IIT Kanpur. The first year classes are proposed to be held at the IIT Kanpur campus and the students admitted will be relocated to the place in Rajasthan where the new IIT will be established. The students and the parents taking admission in the new IIT Rajasthan will be required to give an undertaking to this effect.

IIT Gandhinagar

IIT Gandhinagar
IIT Gandhinagar, in Gujarat, is one of the new IITs proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Gujarat is known for excellent infrastructure with thriving industries, prestigious academic and research institutes and an ambience which encourages entrepreneurship. IIT Bombay has been identified as the mentoring institution for the IIT in Gujarat. Till the campus of the new IIT in Gujarat gets established, the classes will be held within the premises of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, Gandhinagar – 382424, which is within the municipal limits of Gandhinagar. The Golden Jubilee Extension Centre of IIT Bombay is currently located at this College. Students will be provided with residential and other facilities at a temporary location. The curriculum will be similar to that of IIT Bombay with some differences until the time the academic bodies of the new IIT is in place.
The classes for the 4-year B. Tech. courses in the Chemical engineering, Electrical engineering and Mechanical engineering will commence from July/August 2008 at VGEC, Chandkheda.

IIT Punjab

Indian Institute of Technology Punjab is one of the new IITs announced by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. IIT Punjab will be located at Roopnagar (formerly Ropar), along the bank of the Sutlej river, about 50 kms from Chandigarh. However, since the setting up of the new IIT in its final location will take some time, IIT Delhi has been assigned the job of incubating IIT Punjab.
To start with, a 4-year B.Tech programme is being offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses is broadly similar to (but not identical to) that in IIT Delhi. The first year classes are being held at the IIT Delhi campus, and the students admitted will be relocated to Roopnagar from the second year onwards.

IIT Patna

IIT Patna's academic programs commenced from 6th August 2008. In order to ensure the quality synonymous with the name IIT and to expedite its growth, IIT Patna has been placed under the mentorship of IIT Guwahati.IIT Patna is currently offering B.Tech programs in three disciplines - Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The sanctioned strength of batch-2008 is 120. The Ph.D. program in Engineering, Science and Humanities & Social Sciences is expected to commence from July 2009. IIT Patna has recruited 30 faculty members in the first round of recruitment conducted in 2008.

IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad is being mentored by IIT Madras. The academic programme of IITH was launched on 19 August 2008. This Institute has opened its doors to its first batch of students - a total of 111 students (102 boys and 9 girls) in three streams - in the B.Tech programmes in Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in 2008. It is currently located in the campus of the Ordnance Factory (OFMK) in Yeddumailaram .The academic zone, hostels and residential area (53 quarters) are all within the OFMK campus. The IITH campus is, 45 km from Secunderabad Railway Station and 42 km from Jubilee Bus Stand in Secunderabad. The second batch of students joining in the 2009-2010 academic session, and will be housed in the temporary campus on Ordnance Factory Estate itself in Yeddumailaram. The permanent campus is located on the National Highway 9 at Kandi village (near Sangareddy town, in Medak District, Andhra Pradesh). The 212-hectare land will become operational with its first set of buildings and structures by the summer of 2010; the third academic year onwards, students will join the permanent campus directly.
