How to Balance Board and IIT JEE Preparation?

Are you finding it difficult to manage your 12th Class board exam preparation along with JEE? No problem, everyone faces these challenges. Most candidates often gets confused as how to balance board and JEE Preparation. At this point, it is important to stay positive and focused.

While preparing for JEE one must feed in mind that simply mugging up won’t help pass this highly competitive exam. Rather, it is crucial to understand the concepts and learn to apply it to the problems. JEE exam tests candidate’s aptitude and not bookish knowledge.
Students can easily establish an equilibrium between their JEE preparation and personal life, only if they are focused and content.

Learning the art of balancing between board and JEE?

Way # 1
Failure to do justice to both exams is one of the fears that make students psychologically weaker. Thoughts of failure can lead to loss of concentration and worse, depression. To do away this problem, Plancess has come up with the concept of IIT JEE Video Lectures. This innovative technique not only helps you understand the JEE topics better but increases interest.  Video Lectures reduces the amount of time a candidate usually takes to learn a topic in coaching class.

How to balance Board and JEE
Balancing Between Board and IIT JEE Preparation
There are ample benefits of choosing IIT JEE Video Lectures over coaching class lectures. Here are a few of them.
  • Students can view, re-view and store the lectures for future revision. It makes practice and revision easy.
  • These lectures have the ability of clearing concepts and make the most daunting topic easily understandable.
  • As the lectures are delivered by JEE experts and can be viewed multiple times, it acts as a personalized tutor that is with you 24/7.
  • Studying all the day on the study table becomes tedious and boring. Video lectures break that monotony. It acts as the best recreational activity.
  • Video Lectures are often the most affordable option for IIT JEE Preparation.
  • It helps devotee equal amount of time for all the subjects.
  • It helps in quick revision anytime anywhere.
While managing boards with JEE, students tend to forget their social life. This is when studies become burden and stress creeps in. It results in depression and frustration. Hence, balancing both the preparations is really important.
Way # 2
Another way to maintain a balance between boards and JEE test preparation is through IIT JEE Study Plan. Create a study schedule to learn in an efficient manner. Devotee proper time to all three subjects, and give more time to important topics.
Additionally, take JEE mock tests to know your preparation level. The sample tests help you know where you stand just before the exam.

Considering Coaching institutes for IIT JEE

Which coaching institutes are good?

IIT JEE TESTS CONCEPTS

IF u analyze the iit question papers of the past years and the students who get through, “IIT JEE TESTS CONCEPTS”. Concepts have to be self made concepts .

What coaching institutes do?
when a topic is taught in a coaching institute they don’t teach u the concepts that is available in the books why would you need them if they did , what they tell u is that what are the misconceptions students usually have in that topic . What else they do is more tougher problems than iit jee are given to u to solve . A competitive atmosphere is maintained in coaching institutes and you are regularly tested with various assignments’ and tests.

What help students get from coaching institutes?
Coaching institutes follow a fixed timetable(Click here for Important dates for IIT JEE) to cover their portion if u study alongside them then your portion is covered in modules and u are able to pay attention to all topics adequately.
Since you are tested regularly you know where you stand, even though tests at coaching institutes are not very good in testing a persons concepts as the jee paper. But they are much harder. They can give u a rough idea where u stand
Finally the most important thing Concepts, coaching institutes don’t teach concepts but they tell u which books are good and tell u what misconceptions were faced by students so when your studying it becomes easier to understand since u have been shown the path and major wrong turn’s have been blocked.

Which coaching institutes are good?

This varies from city to city, the main parameters to see in a coaching institute are.
What is the strength of the coaching institute if it’s a small one you will face less competition.
Is the faculty good? if the faculty is good you will be taught in a level higher ie, you would face tougher problems .you will face tougher conceptual problems, misconceptions would be blocked from you.
What was the success rate? are there regular tests and are you put in batches according to that? It is very important to be in the right batch, so coaching institutes put u in batches based on your performance in tests.sum do it on a yearly basis and some do it on a monthly basis.

Subject wise Preparation Tips

Subject Wise Study Tips

Mathematics:

1. First you must be able to solve problems from NCERT class XI and class XII books.

2. For best concepts you can purchase ‘IIT Mathematics’ by M.L.Khanna.

3. For the most abundant supply of difficult question topic-wise and their solutions, you may buy ‘New Pattern IITJEE Mathematics’ of Arihant Publications by Dr. S.K.Goyal.

4. For trigonometry and coordinate geometry the books by S.L.Loney are useful.

5. Tata Mcgraw Hills (TMH) books

Physics:

1. Concepts of Physics, Vol.-I, by H.C.Verma

2. Concepts of Physics, Vol.-II, by H.C.Verma

3. Problems in Physics by I.E.Irodov

4. Fundamentals of Physics, by Halliday, Resnik and Walker.

5. Physics by D.C.Pandey, Arihant Publications

Chemistry:

1. NCERT Chemistry text books of class XI and class XII.

2. Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd.

3. For numerical problems-P.Bahadur

4. Inorganic Chemistry by J.D.Lee

5. Physical Chemistry by R.C.Mukherjee and also by P.Bahadur.

6. Organic, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry books by O.P.Tandon.

The 10 pronged strategy to crack IITJEE

1. Solve at least 40-80 numerical problems daily starting from day one. This is inclusive of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

2. Set time limits for a set of questions and see to it that the time-score performance improves.

3. Also find time to analyze the formulae and the theoretical concepts involved. Always think and discuss with like minded mates, (a) what are the points at which you or they are making the mistakes, and (b) what are the factors which slow you down, that is, kill time.

4. When you are solving questions pertaining to a particular topic, keep close watch on previous years’ question papers, say, of last 10-15 years. This is to be carried out only when your cut-out job for the day is done. The pattern changes are to be given special importance.

5. Always achieve your daily target. You have to outdo more and more candidates on a daily basis. Remember there may be, and surely are, many candidates solving 100 problems a day or may be 150-200. When you are about to call it a day, prepare your next day’s detailed schedule.

6. Try to develop a stream-line thought process, which is of great help in solving numerical problems quickly. This kind of thinking can be developed by practising gradual logical progression. It means building up of your solution step by step with contextual thinking and not allowing and discarding stray reasoning.

7. Till the time the exam ends, never ever, for any reason whatsoever, think that the fight has ended. This point is being emphasized since many candidates leave the battle halfway thinking their effort will not cut ice and they will be better prepared next time. Remember even if you are not fully prepared, trying hard will at least make you have a feel of the difficulty barrier and who knows you might be as up in the list as will secure you an entry into the golden gates. Simply said, peaking at the right time may see you through the test. 3 Gs namely, gumption, grit and guts held till the last moment may produce surprising results.

8. Target the difficult parts of the syllabus first and prepare them along with concise, crisp, easy-to-look up notes. Such notes will allow shading extra pressure on the eve of the examination. So the strategy consists in moving to easier parts of the course as the exam nears. Alongside, you would be revising your notes for difficult parts.

9. You will also have to develop a subject-wise strategy. Are you comparatively stronger in Chemistry than Mathematics or Physics ? Then probably you will have to allot more time to the later two. The subject-wise strategy formulated in detail may turn into chapter-wise or topic-wise strategy, meaning that more time is allotted to tougher topics. Moreover fine tune your plan so as to allot more time to the topics which are common to board exams as well as IITJEE during January and February. It may be pre-assumed that the whole of February and more than half of March will have to be devoted to the preparation of and appearing in the board examination.

JEE Main 2014 Rank Predictor: Understanding Percentile and Normalization of Class 12th Board Marks

Creating buzz amongst engineering aspirants, the percentile and normalization process of Class 12th Board marks and JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) Mains scores has been a topic of much concern for the students.
One of the most common questions asked by aspirants is the difference between percentage and percentile. Factually, the percentage of marks and percentile are two totally different entities.
Percentage, is a number out of 100, while percentile or a percentile score of an aspirant in JEE Main or Board basically reflects the number of candidates who have scored below that candidate in their Board exams or JEE(Main) Examination.
What is Normalization? Normalisation is the process of ensuring that students neither are benefitted nor receive any disadvantage by the difficulty of their Boards. The very process is used in other countries with similar issues as in India.

Understanding the Percentile score/system:
As the JEE Mains official website states, “ A Percentile score is the value below which a certain percent of observations fall.”
Explaining the system further, the site quotes an example mentioned below:
40th Percentile is the value or score below which 40 Percent of the observations may be found. The percentile of a candidate will be calculated as:
100 X Number of candidates in the ‘group’ with aggregate marks less than the candidate / Total number of the candidates in the ’group’
Here is an example to make the concept clearer to students:
Suppose in a particular Board, the number of candidates registered are 13918 and  the number of candidates who have actually appeared for the exam is 13711.
Example 1: An aspirant has scored 50% marks in his/her Board and 2218 aspirants have scored below him. In this case, the percentile will for this candidate will be calculated as follows:
Percentile score for 50% marks in the Board =(2218 x 100)13711 = 16.18
Example 2: An aspirant scores 60% marks in his/her Board and 6865 students have scored below:
Him in the exam. In this case, the percentile score will be calculated in the below manner:
Percentile score for 60% marks in the Board = (6865 x 100)/13711 = 50.07
Example 3: An aspirant acquires 90% marks in his/her Board and 13615 students score below him. The percentile score will be calculated in the following way:
Percentile score for 90% marks in the Board =  (13615 x 100)/13711 = 99.30
Thus, the above mentioned examples indicate that the percentage of marks acquired by an aspirant(50%, 60% or 90%) varies from the percentile score (16.18, 50.07 or 99.30).
Subjects considered for the Percentile score:
  • Language
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject)
  • Any other subject
Please note that if a candidate has appeared in six subjects in the qualifying examination, the subject (fifth or sixth) with better marks will be considered.
Data considered to calculate normalized score for qualifying examination marks:
To calculate the normalized qualifying examination marks, given below is the data required:
  • Marks of all the students in that Board whose subject combinations meet the eligibility criteria of JEE-Main.
  • Marks of all the students in JEE (Main) – 2014
Normalized Qualifying Examinations Marks:
Students should note that the normalized qualifying exam marks will be calculated on the basis of the candidate’s position in the Board exam(percentile score). The percentile that an aspirant scores will mainly contribute to his/her normalized marks.
Points to note:
  • Aspirants willing to appear in the improvement examination to improve the qualifying examination marks, will have to appear in all the five subjects mentioned above for improvement.
  • In the percentile system, the total marks (of all five subjects) obtained/shown on the mark-sheet of a particular year are required in JEE (Main) and also in JEE (Advanced). The marks from two different years (i.e. marks for 3 subjects from year 2012 and marks for other 2 subjects from 2013) mark-sheets cannot be considered for percentile calculation.
  • Candidates who are appearing in the improvement examination to improve their qualifying  examination marks will get only one chance to inform JEE (Main) Unit as to which year qualifying  examination marks to be considered for the purpose of declaration of final merit.
JEE Advanced 2014:
1. For JEE Advanced, if an aspirant submits the particulars of his/her qualifying examination for  2013, the top 20 percentile criteria of 2013 will be applicable which was declared by IITs after the declaration of the boards’ results of 2013. Similarly, the candidates who are providing their qualifying  examination particulars of 2014, the criteria of 20 percentile will be applicable which will be declared after the declaration of the boards’ results of 2014.
2. The weightage of normalized qualifying examination marks is only for deciding ranking of JEE (Main)  which will be used for admission to all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs)/ NITs/IIITs but  excluding IITs.
Detailed Normalization Process adopted for admission to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs on the Basis of Class 12th Qualifying examination marks:
  • Ao = Aggregate marks obtained by each student in JEE Main 2014.
  • Bo = Aggregate marks in a particular board computed from a list of five subjects meeting the JEE Main 2014 Eligibility Criteria. This is used to compile the percentile (P) of each student to get the corresponding JEE Main 2014 marks
  • B1 = JEE Main 2014 aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) at the All- India level.
  • B2 = JEE Main 2014 aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE Main 2014 by the students of that board.
Calculation of normalized board score of the candidate:
Bfinal = 0.5 * (B1 + B2)
Note: The JEE Main marks and the Normalized board marks will be used in the ratio of 60: 40 for  admission to the CFTIs(Centrally Funded Technical Institutes).
To derive the JEE Main 2014 merit list, the composite score is calculated in the following way:
C = 0.6 * AO + 0.4 * Bfinal
The composite score, thus, calculated will be the basis to calculate the JEE Main 2014 Merit Ranks.

JEE Main 2014 Rank Predictor: How to calculate ranks and scores

The marks scored by candidates in JEE Main 2014 will be declared by May 3, 2014. This score will contain the actual marks scored by the candidate in Paper-1 of JEE Main 2014 along with the status of whether the candidate has qualified for the JEE Advanced 2014, by fulfilling the required eligibility criteria.
The final rank list confirming the names and roll numbers of candidates who have secured admissions in B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning courses at institutes other than the IITs will be declared on July 7, 2014.
The JEE Main 2014 rank card includes the candidate’s all India rank (AIR), state rank as well as category. However, only the AIR is used for admissions to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs/SFIs/Other institutes through central counselling board. All the other ranks are mentioned for informational purpose only.
How to calculate JEE Main 2014 scores
JEE Main 2014 consists of four sets of questions paper, that is, Code-E, Code-F, Code-G and Code-H. Each set consists of 90 questions. The marks that can be scored are equal across all sections. All questions in the exam paper have the same weightage.
For every correct answer candidates will be awarded with four marks. However, one mark would be deducted for every incorrect answer. The final score is a cumulative value of the marks scored for every correct answer and marks deducted for every wrong answer.
How to calculate JEE Main 2014 rank
The rank of a candidate will be determined on the basis of his/her score in JEE Main-2014 and normalised score in class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam. While calculating JEE Main ranks 60% weightage would be given to JEE Main score whereas 40% weightage would be given to normalised marks in class 12th or equivalent qualifying examination.
However, if two or more candidates have the same marks/rank then the criteria on the basis of which ranks for such candidates will be determined are:
For admission to B.E/B.Tech (other than IITs)
The criteria on the basis of which ranks would be determined for candidates with the same score/rank is:
  • Mathematics marks: The candidate who has scored higher marks in JEE Mains 2014 maths section would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Physics marks: The candidate who has scored higher marks in JEE Mains 2014 physics section would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Total normalised qualifying exam marks: The candidate who has obtained higher normalised marks would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Ratio of positive marks and negative marks: The candidate who has higher absolute value of the ratio would be considered to have a higher rank.
However, even after taking all these criterions in consideration, if the candidates have the same score then the candidates would be considered to be on the same rank.
Admission to B.Arch/B.Planning (in institutes other than IITs)
The criteria on the basis on which ranks would be determined for candidates with the same score/rank is:
  • Aptitude Test in Paper-2: The candidate who has managed to score higher marks in B. Arch /B. Planning aptitude test in JEE Main 2014 paper-2 would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Drawing Test in Paper-2: The candidate who has managed to score higher marks in B. Arch /B. Planning drawing test in JEE Main 2014 paper-2 would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Normalised qualifying exam marks: The candidate who has managed to obtain higher normalised marks would be considered to have a higher rank.
  • Ratio of positive marks and negative marks: The candidate who has higher absolute value of the ratio would be considered to have a higher rank.
However, even after taking all these criterions in consideration, if the candidates have the same score then the candidates would be considered to be on the same rank.
A point to be noted here is that from this year onwards no score/rank card will be dispatched to candidates and they would have to download their final result cards from the official website of JEE Main 2014.
Also, all participating institutes which do not use the centralised counselling procedures will be preparing their own individual rank list on the basis of a candidate’s performance in JEE Main 2014 and other criteria as decided by them.
